How JL Specialties Began

For Jacob Acklin, JL Specialties started long before it became a business in West Plains, Missouri. It began with his grandfather’s project cars, fresh ideas, and time spent working together. Those experiences helped shape the passion Jacob brings to vehicles and aircraft today.
A Passion Passed Down
Jacob’s grandfather, Gorge “Oak” Martin, was a charter member of the West Plains Car Club. He always had a project car and a new idea in mind. His best friend owned a custom body shop, where original paint schemes offered another way to make a vehicle stand out.
One car that holds a place in Jacob’s story is a white Plymouth his grandfather bought new. Working on it together connected Jacob’s interest in cars with something more personal: family, shared projects, and the satisfaction of making an idea real.
That influence still shows up in the way Jacob approaches his work. Fresh ideas come naturally to him, and being different is something to embrace. A vehicle can reflect its owner’s personality, rather than look like everything else on the road.

Jacob wanted to build a life around work he genuinely enjoyed. That desire became JL Specialties, which officially started in April 2025. What began as a part-time business became a full-time focus later that year.
Today, the shop brings together vehicle protection, personalization, and aviation detailing. The work has grown, but the motivation remains personal: putting Jacob’s interest in cars and his willingness to explore new ideas into something he can share with others.
From the Runway to the Driveway
The aviation side began with a simple question. While working in construction, Jacob saw an airplane and wondered whether anyone detailed aircraft—and whether he could do it himself.
He followed through on that curiosity and made aviation detailing part of JL Specialties. It is a fitting extension of the way he thinks: notice a possibility, ask what it would take, and pursue it. “From the runway to the driveway” connects the two sides of the business, bringing his passion for vehicle care beyond the road.

Lauren Acklin
Jacob does not do it alone. His wife and co-owner, Lauren, works behind the scenes to help everything run more smoothly. Her contribution is an important part of the day-to-day business.
An eye for detail
Ben
Ben is Jacob’s right-hand man, ready to work through the ideas Jacob brings to the shop. His particular strength is an exacting eye for detail in paint work. Together, they bring creative thinking and close attention to the work in front of them.
Rooted in West Plains
The connection to the West Plains Car Club continues today. Jacob remains involved, and JL Specialties typically has a vendor booth at club events. It keeps the business connected to the local car community that helped shape his story.
Jacob also supports Grace for Miles, a church-run program helping women in need, including older women, with essential vehicle care. It is another way his interest in vehicles connects with the people around him.
From his grandfather’s white Plymouth to the projects coming through the shop today, Jacob’s story is about taking a lifelong interest and building something of his own. JL Specialties carries that story forward in West Plains, one vehicle, one aircraft, and one new idea at a time.
